Simlipal National Park is a national park and tiger reserve in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, India, covering about 2,750 square kilometers and forming part of the Mayurbhanj Elephant Reserve. It was established in 1980 and takes its name from the red silk cotton trees that grow throughout the area. The reserve holds Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, gaur and the four-horned antelope, and its tiger population has an unusually high rate of pseudo-melanism linked to inbreeding, which has made it a focus of genetic research; UNESCO recognized it as a Biosphere Reserve in 2009.
