Soomaa National Park, whose Estonian name means land of bogs, lies in southwestern Estonia and protects 390 square kilometers of wetland. It was created in 1993, and has been recognized as an Important Bird Area since 1989, a Ramsar site of protected wetlands since 1997 and a Natura 2000 area since 2004.
