Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park lies in the Northern Territory of Australia, roughly 440 kilometers southwest of Alice Springs. Established on January 23, 1958, it covers about 1,334 square kilometers and protects two of Australia's most recognized landmarks, the sandstone monolith Uluru, rising 348 meters, and the 36 conglomerate rock domes of Kata Tjuta. UNESCO listed the park as a World Heritage Site in 1987 for both its natural and cultural significance, and since 1985 it has been jointly managed by Parks Australia and the Anangu, the traditional Aboriginal owners for whom the land holds profound spiritual importance.
