The Wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror National Historic Site protects the remains of the two ships of Sir John Franklin final Arctic expedition, lost in the 1840s during the search for the Northwest Passage, in the waters near King William Island in Nunavut, Canada. HMS Erebus was located on September 7, 2014 in Wilmot and Crampton Bay at about 11 meters depth, and HMS Terror was found on September 12, 2016 in Terror Bay at 21 to 24 meters depth. The site is jointly managed by Parks Canada and the local Inuit, and public access is not permitted except for Inuit hunting and fishing rights and limited authorized visitor experiences. Placed here as Natural Monument or Feature, a disclosed closest fit: the site protects a discrete cultural and archaeological feature rather than a natural ecosystem, and its own designation as a National Historic Site of Canada carries no IUCN category.
