Zhangye Danxia National Geopark

Zhangye Danxia National Geopark protects an area of Danxia landform in Gansu Province, northwestern China, renowned for sandstone and siltstone hills banded in vivid layers of red, orange, yellow and green produced by mineral deposition over millions of years and later exposed by tectonic uplift and erosion. Formally protected and developed for visitation in the early twenty-first century, the geopark showcases a striking example of Danxia topography, a landform type named for and first studied in southern China, and it draws visitors and researchers studying red-bed geomorphology. It is administered by Chinese national and provincial geopark authorities.
