The Barbary Coast is the historical name for the coastal areas of central and western North Africa, spanning the Maghreb and encompassing the territories that became Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Tripoli, present day Libya. From the sixteenth through the nineteenth century the coast was the base of the Barbary corsairs, whose raiding and slave trading made it a major factor in Mediterranean naval history, with the fleet of Algiers alone numbering around one hundred ships by 1625.
