Golden Crescent is one of the two principal illicit opium producing areas of Asia, alongside the Golden Triangle, covering the mountainous borderlands of Afghanistan and Pakistan and extending into eastern Iran at the meeting point of Central, South, and West Asia. The region became a major opium producer from the 1950s onward, and at its peak accounted for more than 8,000 of the roughly 9,000 tons of opium produced worldwide each year.
