Mesoamerica is the historical and cultural macro-region stretching from central Mexico through Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, defined by the shared civilizational legacy of the Olmec, Maya, Zapotec, Aztec and other pre-Columbian peoples. Its unifying traits include a distinctive calendar system, monumental pyramid architecture, maize-based agriculture and a network of trade and ritual practices that bound its many separate polities together for millennia before European contact.
