The Fertile Crescent is the boomerang-shaped historical region of the Middle East arcing from the Nile Valley through the Levant and Mesopotamia toward the Persian Gulf, encompassing some of the earliest sites of agriculture, animal domestication and urban civilization in human history. Its combination of reliable water sources and fertile alluvial soil in an otherwise arid region made it the setting for the Neolithic Revolution and the rise of the world's first cities and states.
