Mesopotamia is the historical region of the Middle East lying between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, largely coextensive with modern Iraq and parts of Syria and Turkey. Widely regarded as one of the cradles of civilization, it was home to the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian civilizations and to some of humanity's earliest cities, writing systems and codified laws.
