The longest river of Western Asia, rising in eastern Turkey and flowing through Syria and Iraq before joining the Tigris to form the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. It watered the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and remains a critical, and diplomatically contested, water source today.
