The Persian Gulf is a mediterranean sea in West Asia, an extension of the Arabian Sea and the larger Indian Ocean lying between the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. It connects to the Gulf of Oman and the open ocean through the Strait of Hormuz, and the Shatt al-Arab river delta forms its north-west shoreline.
