Kuwait is a small state in West Asia at the head of the Persian Gulf, on the northeastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula, bordering Iraq to the north and Saudi Arabia to the south. It became independent on 19 June 1961, ending its status as a British protectorate. It is a hereditary emirate with a constitutional, semi-democratic government. Its capital is Kuwait City.
