Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and the capital of the Emirate of Dubai, sitting on a creek along the southeastern coast of the Persian Gulf. Its population stands at about four million, the great majority of them foreign-born expatriates rather than Emirati citizens, reflecting the city's transformation from a modest trading and pearling port into a global hub for finance, tourism and air travel over the past half century. Dubai is known worldwide for its skyline of record-breaking skyscrapers, its artificial islands, and its position as a duty-free shopping and business gateway between Europe, Asia and Africa.
