Western Asia is the United Nations geoscheme's term for the region comprising the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant, Mesopotamia, Anatolia and the South Caucasus, an area more commonly and more narrowly known in everyday usage as the Middle East. As a formal statistical and geographic classification it includes states the popular term Middle East sometimes excludes, such as Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Cyprus, making it the broader of the two overlapping terms for the same part of Eurasia.
