Qatar is a country occupying a peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula in West Asia, sharing its only land border with Saudi Arabia to the south and surrounded elsewhere by the Persian Gulf, with the Gulf of Bahrain separating it from nearby Bahrain. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 3 September 1971. It is a unitary semi-constitutional monarchy. Its capital is Doha.
