The Lesser Antilles are the smaller islands of the eastern and southern Caribbean, arcing from the Virgin Islands south to Trinidad and Tobago off the coast of Venezuela. They are conventionally divided into the volcanic Windward and Leeward Islands and the low coral islands further south, and include a mix of independent states, overseas departments and dependent territories of France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States. The chain marks the boundary where the Caribbean tectonic plate meets the Atlantic.
