The Midwest is one of the four census regions defined by the United States Census Bureau, occupying the north central part of the country between the Northeastern and Western United States, with Canada to the north and the South to the south. It comprises twelve states, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, lying largely on the Interior Plain between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains and shaped by the Ohio, Mississippi, and Missouri Rivers.
