The Swahili Coast is the historical and cultural region along the Indian Ocean coastline of East Africa, stretching from southern Somalia through Kenya and Tanzania to northern Mozambique, including the island of Zanzibar. Shaped over a thousand years by trade across the Indian Ocean with Arabia, Persia and South Asia, it gave rise to the Swahili language and a distinct Swahili civilization of coastal city-states blending African, Arab and Persian influences.
