A narrow seawater inlet separating the Arabian Peninsula from northeastern Africa, linked to the Indian Ocean through the Bab-el-Mandeb strait and to the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal. It is among the saltiest and warmest bodies of seawater in the world and supports extensive coral reef systems along its coasts.
