The high Andean lands of western South America, the human and ecological zone shaped by the Andes mountain range rather than the range's bare geology, spanning parts of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. Elevation governs nearly everything about the region: distinct ecological zones stack from tropical lowland forest through temperate highland valleys to permanent snowline within short horizontal distances, and high-altitude agriculture and pastoralism, most famously of the potato and of llamas and alpacas, developed here in forms found nowhere else at comparable scale.
