Gilgit-Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan, formerly called the Northern Areas, is a region administered by Pakistan as an administrative territory, consisting of the northern portion of the larger Kashmir region. Kashmir has been disputed between India and Pakistan since 1947 and, over its easternmost portion, between India and China since 1959; this atlas records Pakistan's administration of Gilgit-Baltistan as a fact of current control without asserting either side's sovereignty claim as settled. The territory borders Azad Kashmir to the south, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province to the west, Afghanistan's Wakhan District to the north, China's Xinjiang region to the east, and the Indian-administered union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to the southeast.
