Negeri Sembilan is a state in Malaysia on the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, bordering Selangor to the north, Pahang to the east and Malacca and Johor to the south. Its capital is Seremban and its royal capital is Seri Menanti in Kuala Pilah District, while Port Dickson, Bahau and Nilai are other important towns. The name is believed to come from the nine villages, or luaks, settled by Minangkabau people from West Sumatra, whose features remain visible in the traditional architecture and the Malay dialect. Unlike the hereditary monarchs of the other royal Malay states, its ruler, the Yang di-Pertuan Besar, is elected by the council of Undangs, and it is the only state in Malaysia that is a coregency. The modern state took shape between 1889 and 1895, it joined the Federation of Malaya in 1948 and became a state of Malaysia in 1963. The state has 6,686 square kilometres of land.
