Perlis is a state of Malaysia on the northwestern coast of Peninsular Malaysia and the smallest state by area and population. It borders the Thai provinces of Satun and Songkhla to the north and the Malaysian state of Kedah to the south. Perlis is the only Malaysian state that is not divided into districts, because of its small size, although it is divided into 22 mukims. The Siamese called it Palit when it was under their influence. The capital and largest city is Kangar, and the royal capital is Arau, while Padang Besar on the Thai border and Kuala Perlis, the ferry town for Langkawi, are other important places. The highest point is Mount Perlis at 733 metres, part of the Nakawan Range, and the state had 227,025 people at the 2010 census. Its land area is 819 square kilometres.
