Sarawak is a state of Malaysia in East Malaysia, in northwest Borneo, and the largest of the 13 states, with an area almost equal to that of Peninsular Malaysia. It is bordered by the Malaysian state of Sabah to the northeast, by Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo, to the south and by Brunei to the north. The state capital Kuching is its largest city, its economic centre and the seat of the state government, and other cities and towns include Miri, Sibu and Bintulu. The 2020 census counted 2.453 million people. The climate is equatorial, with tropical rainforest, and the Niah Caves hold the earliest known human settlement in Sarawak, dated to 40,000 years ago. The Brooke family governed the state from 1841 to 1946, it became a British Crown Colony in 1946, and on 16 September 1963 it joined Malaya, North Borneo and Singapore in the Federation of Malaysia.
