West Sumatra, or Sumatera Barat, is a province of Indonesia on the western coast of Sumatra, facing the Indian Ocean and stretching from the Barisan Mountains to a chain of offshore islands including the Mentawai Islands. Its capital is Padang, and it is the historic homeland of the Minangkabau people, one of Indonesia's largest ethnic groups and among the world's largest matrilineal societies.
