FAQs

Why do Ethiopians still speak so reverently about the Battle of Adwa?

Ethiopians defeated Italian forces at Adwa in 1896 and won their freedom from colonial rule.

At Adwa in 1896, Ethiopians defeated Italian forces and won their freedom from colonial rule, which is why many Ethiopians still remember the battle with reverence. Italy later occupied Ethiopia from 1936 to 1941, after Emperor Haile Selassie unsuccessfully appealed to the League of Nations in 1935 to prevent it.
