A major river rising in Tibet, where it is known as the Yarlung Tsangpo, before flowing through northeastern India and Bangladesh to join the Ganges and empty into the Bay of Bengal. It carries an exceptionally heavy sediment and water load and is prone to severe seasonal flooding.
