Bengal is the historical and cultural region of the eastern Indian subcontinent, occupying the delta of the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers, and divided since the 1947 partition of British India between the Indian state of West Bengal and the independent nation of Bangladesh, formerly East Pakistan. One of the most densely populated regions on Earth, it gave rise to a rich Bengali literary and artistic tradition, including the work of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, and its 1905 and 1947 partitions along religious lines remain defining episodes in South Asian history.
