The Indian subcontinent and its surrounding states, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, set off from the rest of Asia by the Himalayas, the Hindu Kush and the Indian Ocean. It holds about a quarter of the world population on about ten percent of the Asian landmass, and Afghanistan is sometimes counted as part of it as well.
