Benin City is the capital and largest city of Edo State in southern Nigeria, the fourth-largest city in the country after Lagos, Kano and Ibadan. Once the seat of the historic Benin Empire, one of the oldest and most developed states in West Africa, the city is renowned for the Benin Bronzes, celebrated brass and bronze sculptures produced by its royal court and largely looted by a British expedition in 1897, many of which remain the subject of ongoing restitution efforts.
