Berbera is a coastal city in Somaliland's Sahil region, about 160 kilometers from the national capital, Hargeisa, and the country's main seaport. It was the capital of the British Somaliland protectorate before that role passed to Hargeisa, and from the thirteenth through the nineteenth centuries it served as a major port for the Ifat, Adal and Isaaq sultanates.
