Calabar is the capital city of Cross River State in southeastern Nigeria, on the Calabar and Great Kwa rivers near the creeks of the Cross River. Its population was about 371,000 at the 2006 census, with the combined Calabar Municipal and Calabar South areas estimated at about 635,000. Originally known as Akwa Akpa in the Efik language, Calabar has been promoted as the "tourism capital of Nigeria" since improvements made under governor Donald Duke in the early 2000s.
