Otjiwarongo is the capital of the Otjozondjupa Region in central-north Namibia, established in 1906 as a German administrative post on land earlier settled by San and Damara peoples. Its name comes from Herero and means a beautiful place; the 2023 census recorded 49,022 inhabitants, up from 28,249 in 2011. Mining, including the B2Gold open-pit gold mine opened in 2014 and the Okorusu fluorspar mine, accounts for roughly a fifth of the town's economy, and it sits on Namibia's main north-south highway and rail line.
