Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba, is an island nation in the Caribbean comprising a main island and approximately 4,195 smaller islands and cays, at the convergence of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The Republic of Cuba was formally established on 20 May 1902, after United States military occupation ended. Since 1959, Cuba has operated as a socialist state under communist governance. Its capital is Havana.

Cuba's independence movement traces to Carlos Manuel de Cespedes's declaration on 10 October 1868, and Spain recognized Cuban sovereignty on 10 December 1898 following the Spanish-American War.
