The Greater Antilles are the larger islands of the Caribbean Sea: Cuba, Hispaniola (shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Jamaica and Puerto Rico. They form the northern arc of the Antilles island chain, separating the Caribbean Sea from the open Atlantic Ocean, and hold the great majority of the Caribbean's land area and population. Geologically older and larger than the Lesser Antilles to the southeast, they were among the first landfalls of European contact with the Americas in 1492.
