The Dominican Republic is an island country on the eastern part of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean Sea, sharing the island with Haiti. On 27 February 1844, the members of La Trinitaria declared independence from Haiti. Its capital is Santo Domingo.
