Geography Atlas

Open Questions

Things this atlas does not know. Each entry is a question that specialists have posed and not settled, recorded with what would actually resolve it and which expertise the answer needs.

These are kept deliberately, rather than quietly omitted. An atlas that shows only what it is sure of implies a confidence it has not earned, and the gaps are often where the interesting work is. Several sit exactly where two fields fail to meet: identifying the hyssop of the Hebrew Bible needs a botanist and a philologist of Biblical Hebrew, and neither one settles it alone.

Grouped by the shape of the gap rather than its subject: what sort of thing is unresolved.

Permafrost and Periglacial Processes How much carbon will permafrost thaw actually release this century, and how much of it will come from abrupt rather than gradual thaw?

Open Permafrost and Periglacial Processes

Why It Is Open Permafrost holds an estimated 1,400 to 1,650 billion tons of organic carbon. Even under a high-warming scenario, only an estimated 5 to 15 percent of it is expected to be lost over decades and centuries through gradual thaw, but abrupt thaw processes (thermokarst collapse, thaw slumps) release proportionally more methane, accounting for an estimated 40 to 70 percent of the total warming impact from permafrost carbon, and abrupt thaw remains far harder to model and quantify than gradual thaw. Vegetation regrowth is very unlikely to offset the emissions either way. The range between the gradual-thaw and abrupt-thaw estimates is wide enough that the century-scale climate impact is not yet pinned down.

What Would Settle It Long-term field monitoring of abrupt-thaw sites across the permafrost zone, paired with permafrost carbon models that fully incorporate abrupt thaw rather than gradual thaw alone.

Expertise Needed Climatology and Earth system science

Central Europe What is the total area of Central Europe?

Open Central Europe

Why It Is Open Central Europe is a subregion whose membership varies by classification. The Wikipedia article consulted for this entity gives the region's often-included member states but no single total area figure.

What Would Settle It A reference that states an exact set of member states matching this atlas's own list (Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland) and gives a summed area for that exact set.

Question posed in Central Europe (Wikipedia), Lead section.

Central Europe What is the total population of Central Europe?

Open Central Europe

Why It Is Open Central Europe is a subregion whose membership varies by classification. The Wikipedia article consulted for this entity gives the region's often-included member states but no single current population total.

What Would Settle It A reference that states an exact set of member states matching this atlas's own list and gives a summed, dated population for that exact set.

Question posed in Central Europe (Wikipedia), Lead section.

The Mediterranean What is the total population of the Mediterranean region?

Open The Mediterranean

Why It Is Open The atlas entity covers the lands ringing the Mediterranean Sea. The Wikipedia article on the Mediterranean basin consulted for this entity states plainly that the basin is not the same area as the sea's drainage basin and includes countries, such as Iraq, Jordan and Portugal, that a naive coastal count would miss, so no single population total was found that matches this atlas's own definition.

What Would Settle It A reference that states population for the exact set of lands this atlas describes as ringing the Mediterranean (southern Europe, the Levant coast, the Maghreb and Egypt), not the sea's hydrological drainage basin.

Question posed in Mediterranean Basin (Wikipedia), Geography section.

The Caucasus What is the total population of the Caucasus?

Open The Caucasus

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article on the Caucasus consulted for this entity describes the region's ethnic and linguistic diversity in detail but states no aggregate population figure for the region as a whole.

What Would Settle It A reference that gives a dated, summed population for the specific set of territories (parts of southern Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan) this atlas's own entity describes.

Question posed in Caucasus (Wikipedia), Demographics section.

The Levant What is the total area of the Levant?

Open The Levant

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article on the Levant consulted for this entity states both a narrow, current-usage definition and a much wider historical one, with no single total area figure attached to either.

What Would Settle It A reference giving a summed area for the narrow, current-usage set this atlas adopts: Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria and Turkey's Hatay province.

Question posed in Levant (Wikipedia), Lead section.

Western Europe What is the total area of Western Europe?

Open Western Europe

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article on Western Europe consulted for this entity states outright that the region's extent varies by context, and gives no single total area figure.

What Would Settle It A reference giving a summed area for the exact set of states this atlas's own entity names as most consistently included: France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland.

Question posed in Western Europe (Wikipedia), Lead section.

Northern Europe What is the total area of Northern Europe?

Open Northern Europe

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article on Northern Europe consulted for this entity states the region has several competing definitions, and gives no single total area figure.

What Would Settle It A reference giving a summed area for the exact set of states and territories this atlas's own broad UN geoscheme definition names.

Question posed in Northern Europe (Wikipedia), Lead section.

Southern Europe What is the total area of Southern Europe?

Open Southern Europe

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia article on Southern Europe consulted for this entity states the region is loosely defined, and gives no single total area figure.

What Would Settle It A reference giving a summed area for the exact set of states this atlas's own entity names across its three peninsulas (Iberian, Italian, Balkan).

Question posed in Southern Europe (Wikipedia), Lead section.

Warri What is the elevation of Warri above sea level?

Open Warri

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia infobox elevation_m field for Warri is left blank; no other source consulted in this pass supplies a figure.

What Would Settle It A cited geographic or government dataset giving the elevation of Warri in meters.

Expertise Needed physical geography

Question posed in Warri (Wikipedia), Infobox, elevation_m (blank).

Wau What is the total area of Wau in square kilometers?

Open Wau

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia infobox area_total_km2 field for Wau is left blank.

What Would Settle It A cited government or geographic dataset giving the municipal or urban area of Wau.

Expertise Needed physical geography

Question posed in Wau (Wikipedia), Infobox, area_total_km2 (blank).

Timbuktu When Was Timbuktu Founded?

Open Timbuktu

Why It Is Open Timbuktu's traditional founding is dated to around 1100 CE by oral tradition and early Arabic chronicles such as the Tarikh al-Sudan, but no archaeological or documentary evidence fixes an exact founding year, and estimates in the scholarly literature range across more than a century.

What Would Settle It A stratigraphic excavation of the city's earliest occupation layers, or the discovery of an earlier independent written record naming the settlement, would narrow the range historians currently work with.

Expertise Needed Archaeology and historical philology

Question posed in Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Warri In what year was Warri founded or first settled?

Open Warri

Why It Is Open The Wikipedia infobox gives no established or founding date field value; the article history section only fixes a British trading station from 1898 and formal administrative control from 1906, dates for colonial activity rather than the founding of the settlement itself.

What Would Settle It A cited historical source giving a founding or first-settlement date for Warri, distinct from the 1898 trading post and 1906 administrative dates already on record.

Expertise Needed history

Question posed in Warri (Wikipedia), History section.

Hargeisa In what year was Hargeisa founded?

Open Hargeisa

Why It Is Open The article gives no single founding year: an undated oral tradition credits early Isaaq clans with an original watering and trading stop, and a separate account places the founding of the religious commune by Sheikh Madar in the latter half of the 1800s.

What Would Settle It A cited source giving a specific year or decade for either the original settlement or the Sheikh Madar commune.

Expertise Needed history

Question posed in Hargeisa (Wikipedia), Etymology and History sections.

Wau In what year was Wau founded?

Open Wau

Why It Is Open The article states Wau was established by the French Marchand Mission as Fort Desaix and later used as a zariba by slave traders, without giving a specific year for either event.

What Would Settle It A cited source dating the Marchand Mission founding of Fort Desaix or the earlier zariba at the site.

Expertise Needed history

Question posed in Wau (Wikipedia), History section.

Shymkent In what century was Shymkent actually founded?

Open Shymkent

Why It Is Open The same Wikipedia article carries two unreconciled founding claims: the infobox established_date field states an ancient 3rd to 2nd century BC establishment, while the History section prose states the town was founded in the twelfth century AD as a caravanserai protecting the nearby Silk Road town of Sayram. content.EntityProperty.founding-year is a single Int value and cannot honestly hold both claims at once.

What Would Settle It A specialist source, such as an archaeological survey of the Shymkent site or a Kazakhstan heritage authority publication, reconciling the ancient settlement referenced in the infobox with the twelfth-century caravanserai founding given in the article prose.

Expertise Needed history

Question posed in Shymkent (Wikipedia), History section, opening sentence, vs infobox established_date field.

Continents How many continents are there: five, six or seven?

Open Continents

Why It Is Open The physical landmasses are not in dispute, but where the lines are drawn between them is a matter of convention that differs by educational tradition rather than by geology. The seven-continent model this atlas uses (treating Europe, Asia, North America and South America as four separate continents) is standard in the United States, the United Kingdom, China and India. A six-continent model combining Europe and Asia into Eurasia is standard in Russia and much of eastern Europe. A different six-continent model combining North and South America into a single American continent is standard in much of Latin America and Spain. A five-continent model, familiar from the five rings of the Olympic flag, combines the Americas into one and excludes Antarctica as uninhabited. No geological survey settles which grouping is correct, because the disagreement is about classification, not about where any coastline actually lies.

What Would Settle It Nothing within geography itself; the count is a pedagogical and cultural convention rather than an empirical question, so no future survey or measurement resolves it. What would change the entry is a documented shift in which convention is most widely taught, which is a question for comparative education research rather than earth science.

Expertise Needed Comparative education and the history of geography teaching, not earth science.

Question posed in United States Geological Survey.

Melanesia Which islands and peoples actually belong inside Melanesia, and does the category itself still hold together?

Open Melanesia

Why It Is Open Melanesia was coined in 1832 by Jules Dumont d'Urville alongside Micronesia, to sit beside the already-established Polynesia, originally on now-rejected racial grounds. There is no general agreement even among anthropologists about where its geographical boundaries run: whether New Guinea belongs fully inside it, whether Fiji is better classified as Melanesian or Polynesian given its historical and genetic ties to both, and how to classify Torres Strait Islander communities. Modern scholarship has moved toward defining the region by shared cultural and linguistic features rather than the original racial classification, but that shift has not settled where the lines fall.

What Would Settle It A cultural or linguistic classification standard for the region that current Pacific studies scholarship agrees on and applies consistently to the contested cases (New Guinea, Fiji, Torres Strait); no such consensus standard exists yet.

Expertise Needed Anthropology and Pacific studies

Question posed in Melanesia (Wikipedia), Definition, boundary debates section.

Africa Does Africa have 54 countries or 55, depending on whether Western Sahara counts as a sovereign state?

Open Africa

Why It Is Open Africa is conventionally counted as 54 fully recognized sovereign states. Western Sahara, claimed by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and administered in large part by Morocco as its Southern Provinces, is a member of the African Union but is not universally recognized as an independent country, so whether it counts as Africa's fifty-fifth state depends on which recognition standard a source applies.

What Would Settle It A settlement of Western Sahara's sovereignty dispute, whether through independence, recognized integration into Morocco, or a decisive referendum, would fix the count; short of that, the number depends on which body's recognition standard is used.

Expertise Needed Political geography

Question posed in Africa (Wikipedia), Countries and territories section, sovereign-state count and Western Sahara status.

Antarctica Do the seven national territorial claims in Antarctica hold any real legal weight, given that the Antarctic Treaty freezes them without resolving them?

Open Antarctica

Why It Is Open Seven countries, Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway and the United Kingdom, have made territorial claims covering parts of Antarctica, and three of those claims, Argentina's, Chile's and the United Kingdom's, physically overlap the same sector. The 1959 Antarctic Treaty neither recognizes nor cancels any of these claims; it bars any new claim and bars any existing claim from being enlarged while the treaty is in force, leaving the underlying ownership question frozen rather than settled.

What Would Settle It Either a new treaty replacing the current freeze with a settled territorial arrangement, or a claimant state formally renouncing its claim, would resolve which of the overlapping claims, if any, holds.

Expertise Needed International law

Question posed in Territorial claims in Antarctica (Wikipedia), Overlapping claims section, the Argentina-Chile-UK triple overlap and the treaty's no-new-claim rule.
