Central Europe is a subregion of Europe lying between Eastern, Southern, Western and Northern Europe, often said to include Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland. Its member states share overlapping historical and cultural ties despite considerable diversity, and the German name Mitteleuropa carried real political weight at times, tied to visions of German economic and political leadership before World War I and again in the 1930s and 1940s, before settling since 1989 into a primarily geographic and cultural sense.
