Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe, bordered by Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria, spanning much of the Carpathian Basin. Its statehood traces through several stages with no single clean founding date: the Principality of Hungary was established in 895, it became a Christian kingdom in the year 1000 under King Stephen I, its modern borders were set by the 1920 Treaty of Trianon, and it became a parliamentary republic after the 1989 revolutions. Its capital is Budapest.
