Natural Arch Formation

The carving of a rock arch from a freestanding fin, wall or headland of rock as weathering and erosion exploit a line of weakness and slowly pierce a hole through it. Away from the coast the process is usually driven by frost wedging, chemical weathering and the collapse of weaker rock beneath a more resistant caprock, producing landmark spans such as those of Utah's Arches National Park.
