A subregion of Oceania in the western Pacific comprising roughly 2,000 small islands across four main archipelagos, the Caroline, Gilbert, Mariana and Marshall Islands, along with Nauru and Wake Island. Political control is split among five sovereign states, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru and Palau, and territories including Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Alongside Melanesia and Polynesia it completes the classical three-way division of Pacific Oceania, distinguished from the other two by a wide oceanic spread over a comparatively small total land area. Is Micronesia the same thing as the Federated States of Micronesia?
No: Micronesia is a Pacific island region, and the Federated States of Micronesia is one of the countries within it.
No. Micronesia is a subregion of Oceania made up of many small islands in the western Pacific, while the Federated States of Micronesia is a single sovereign country inside that region. The United Nations M49 geoscheme lists the Federated States of Micronesia as one of the members of its Micronesia group, together with Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru and Palau as sovereign states, and with Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands among the territories. The shared name is why the two are often mixed up.
