Europe

Benelux is the economic and political union, and by extension the geographic region, of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg in northwestern Europe, whose name derives from the customs union the three countries formed in 1944. Densely populated, highly urbanized and among the most prosperous parts of Europe, the region has long served as a hub of European trade, transport and, since the mid-twentieth century, European political integration.

How did Luxembourg come to join the Benelux Customs Union?

Luxembourg entered the Benelux Customs Union in 1948 after decades of neutrality.

Luxembourg became a grand duchy in 1815 and a constituent part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands after the Congress of Vienna. It gained full independence in 1867 by promising to remain permanently neutral. That neutrality ended in 1948, when Luxembourg entered the Benelux Customs Union and then joined NATO the following year.
