Benelux is the economic and political union, and by extension the geographic region, of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg in northwestern Europe, whose name derives from the customs union the three countries formed in 1944. Densely populated, highly urbanized and among the most prosperous parts of Europe, the region has long served as a hub of European trade, transport and, since the mid-twentieth century, European political integration.
