Kashmir is the mountainous region of the northwestern Indian subcontinent at the western end of the Himalayas, disputed since the 1947 partition of British India between India, Pakistan and, over a smaller eastern portion, China. Prized historically for its dramatic alpine scenery and the fertile Kashmir Valley, the region remains one of the world's most militarized and long-running territorial disputes, divided along a Line of Control that has never been formalized as an international border.
