The Indian Subcontinent is the physiographic and cultural landmass of South Asia projecting southward from the rest of the continent, bounded by the Himalayas to the north and the Indian Ocean on three sides, and comprising India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka along with the Maldives. Distinguished by the Indo-Gangetic Plain, the Deccan Plateau and a shared civilizational history stretching back to the Indus Valley Civilization, it is one of the most densely populated and culturally diverse regions on Earth.
