The Nordic Countries are the group of five sovereign states in northern Europe, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland, together with their associated territories of Greenland, the Faroe Islands and the Aland Islands, united by geographic proximity, historical ties and a shared political tradition of extensive social welfare systems. Broader than Scandinavia, which excludes Finland and Iceland on strict linguistic and geographic grounds, the Nordic grouping reflects the political and cultural cooperation formalized through bodies such as the Nordic Council.
