Punjab is the historical and cultural region of the northwestern Indian subcontinent, named for the five rivers that cross its fertile plain, and divided since the 1947 partition of British India between the Indian state of Punjab and Pakistan's larger Punjabi-majority province of the same name. Traditionally regarded as the homeland of Sikhism, founded there in the fifteenth century, the region has also long been one of South Asia's most productive agricultural areas, a legacy of the canal-irrigation systems built across its plain.
