Kashmir

Asia

Kashmir is the mountainous region of the northwestern Indian subcontinent at the western end of the Himalayas, disputed since the 1947 partition of British India between India, Pakistan and, over a smaller eastern portion, China. Prized historically for its dramatic alpine scenery and the fertile Kashmir Valley, the region remains one of the world's most militarized and long-running territorial disputes, divided along a Line of Control that has never been formalized as an international border.

FAQs

Which countries administer parts of Kashmir today?

India, Pakistan and China each administer part of Kashmir.

Kashmir is administered by three countries. India administers the territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Pakistan administers Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. China administers Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract. The name Kashmir once meant only the Kashmir Valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range, and it now covers this larger area that formerly made up the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.
