The Arabian Peninsula
Also Known As Arabia
Asia
The Arabian Peninsula is a peninsula in West Asia of about 3,237,500 square kilometres, the largest peninsula in the world, carrying Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen and the southern portions of Iraq and Jordan. It is overwhelmingly desert, an extension of the Sahara system that includes the Rub al Khali in the south, the Nefud in the north and the Dahna between them, with mountain ranges along its eastern, southern and northwestern edges. Its climate is extremely hot and arid outside a few higher elevations and coastal strips. Is the Sinai Peninsula part of the Arabian Peninsula?
Usually no. The Sinai lies on the African plate, though ancient Arabia was drawn more widely.
Generally not, though it depends on the era. The Sinai sits on the African plate and is partly separated from the Arabian Peninsula by the Gulf of Aqaba. Before the 7th century, Greco-Roman ideas of Arabia were broader than the modern peninsula and reached into the Southern Levant, taking in the Sinai, the Negev and parts of modern Jordan, as in the Roman province of Arabia Petraea, whose capital was Petra.
